Jung Jong-Yeon Does Whatever He Wants with ‘Agents of Mystery’ [Watched on OTT]
Back in 2010, when tvN’s variety shows were dominated by the Na Young-Seok and Jung Jong-Yeon duo, there was a saying: “Na Young-Seok makes the money, Jung Jong-Yeon spends it.” Both created popular content, but while Na’s programs were known for their cost-efficiency and strong character dynamics, Jung’s were known for their lavish production.
Jung Jong-Yeon’s Move to TEO
In 2022, when Jung Jong-Yeon left CJ ENM to join Kim Tae-Ho’s TEO, there was speculation about the grand spectacles he would create. Despite tvN’s substantial backing for his projects, the industry was curious about how he would manage on his own.
True to expectations, he launched ‘Devil’s Plan’ with Netflix last year. He was continuing his tradition of brain survival shows like ‘The Genius’ and ‘Society Game’. Alongside these, he also needed a situation reality show. That’s about where participants work together to achieve a common goal, much like ‘Great Escape’ and ‘Girls’ High School Mystery Class’. The answer to this was ‘Agents of Mystery’, which premiered on June 18.
The Concept of ‘Agents of Mystery’
‘Agents of Mystery’ features six members – Hyeri, Lee Eun-Ji, Karina, John Park, Lee Yong-Jin, and Kim Do-Hoon. They become members of the secret investigative organization ‘XIN’, solving mysterious events hidden around the world. This show’s format is similar to his previous works. But there’s a key difference. In this show, participants receive a thorough briefing before diving into the storyline. That’s unlike previous shows where they were unaware of the setting.
Spectacular Production Value
‘Agents of Mystery’ exemplifies Jung’s penchant for high production value, which was less visible in ‘Devil’s Plan’. The series comprises six episodes with three episodes per theme. The first theme, ‘Priests of the Devil’, involves 100 extras portraying members of a cult and a spectacular scene in an abandoned factory with a giant LED monitor displaying summoning rituals.
The second theme, ‘Deep-Sea Exploration’, features an elaborate set that resembles a real submarine, complete with effects symbolizing oxygen shortage and seawater intrusion. The highlight is the mysterious creature that terrifies the participants, showcasing the significant budget spent on production.
Jung Jong-Yeon’s Unique Touch
While ‘Girls’ High School Mystery Class’ has shifted towards a more realistic approach since Jung’s departure, his distinctive, surreal style remains prominent in ‘Agents of Mystery’. One thing is clear: for a variety show to be enjoyable without burden, the continuous tension from surreal situations is crucial. Jung Jong-Yeon, now free from budget constraints, is fully embracing and executing his unique vision.
