KANU on the Table: The Coffee Pop-Up Capturing Hearts

A Journey in a Cup of Coffee

Are you a coffee enthusiast? While enjoying a cup in a cozy café is delightful, many now relish brewing at home. With the rise of home cafés, featuring coffee machines, drip equipment, and various beans, the coffee culture is evolving. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), 57.7% of people in 2022 used coffee machines, a 22.7% increase since 2014. Capitalizing on this trend, coffee companies are actively launching pop-up stores to showcase their brands. Today, I’m introducing a unique pop-up experience: “KANU on the Table” in Seongsu-dong.

A December Visit to Seongsu-dong

I visited Seongsu-dong on December 28th, amidst a festive atmosphere. “KANU on the Table” is hosted at the popular Seongsu spot “Layer 57”. The striking red “KANU” sign and colorful surrounding lights immediately catch the eye. Since its opening on December 8th, the pop-up has drawn an average of 800 visitors daily. With reservations fully booked, entry was possible only through on-site waiting, and even on weekdays, the queue was long.

The Immersive Experience Begins

Upon entering through a coffee cup-shaped door, the adventure starts. Visitors receive a guide with the sequence of experiences and an individual recognition card. Then, at a kiosk, you can conduct a coffee preference survey, similar to an MBTI test. The result? You’ll find out what your ideal coffee is shortly.

KANU Mini Table

The next room, “KANU Mini Table”, showcases various everyday moments with KANU coffee through charming miniatures. From ski resorts to camping scenes, it beautifully captures moments that remind you of warm coffee. Don’t miss out on taking pictures with these miniatures!

KANU on the Table Zone

Moving to a smaller room, you place your card on the table and wear a headset. Here, a video plays, revealing the journey of your preferred coffee, identified at the entrance. This is the “KANU on the Table” zone. After the video, a barista places a real cup of coffee, corresponding to the one on the screen, before you. My preference was the “Stick KANU Mild Roast Americano”, a familiar choice that felt special after this journey.

The Narrowing Pathway and KANU Giant Table

Next, a narrowing path leads to a small door, giving a sensation of shrinking. Opening it, you find giant-sized KANU coffee sticks, coffee machines, and capsules. This is the “KANU Giant Table” zone, famous on Instagram for its unique photo opportunities.

KANU DIY Table

The final space, “KANU DIY Table”, allows you to choose three KANU stick or capsule products and package them in a box, adorned with cute stickers. There’s also a social media event offering antique mugs.

The Café and Diverse Visitors

After exploring four zones, visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee matching their taste at the café, where KANU machines and various capsule coffees are available for purchase. The pop-up’s diverse visitors, ranging from 20s to 50s and including foreigners, show coffee’s universal appeal. Rachel (27), from the USA, mentioned she came after learning about it on social media.

Plan Your Visit

“KANU on the Table” is open until the 28th of this month, accepting around 100 groups daily on a first-come, first-served basis. By 2 PM on weekdays, they’re usually fully booked, so early arrival is recommended. Don’t miss this unique coffee journey!
